Teacher Profile

Mrs Miriam Towers, LLB, MSc

Law & Citizenship Studies

I was trained as a barrister, having studied Law at GCSE and A-Level and obtained an LLB in Law from the University of Durham in 1995. I subsequently studied at London’s Inns of Court School of Law to become a Barrister at Law, and subsequently practised at the Bar in criminal, family, and civil cases. I also hold a Masters degree in Legal Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University.

I left the Bar in order to raise a family. I am blessed with four children, whom I have home-schooled throughout their education for the last twenty years until they all reached the age of 16.

I very much enjoy teaching and seeing children grow in knowledge and in the ability to debate and assess the arguments that they will inevitably come across in life. I believe it is best to be willing to debate anything: doubt and unbelief grow in silence, whereas the truth of the Bible stands up to all criticism and is always relevant to our current situation.

Citizenship Studies is a great subject for Christian educators to pursue, in order to understand how to effect change through our political system. God has placed us as citizens in a liberal democracy with all its benefits and faults. We should learn to use the freedoms that God has given us in order to know how and when to speak out and campaign to the best effect. When they see a bad law being passed, this course will equip students to understand how that law was passed, how it will be enforced, and how we can campaign for that law to be changed or repealed. Prayer and action should be combined in a Christian’s life as a witness to others, and in order to “seek the peace of the city” in which God has placed us (Jeremiah 29:7). For too long the media has presented campaigners as woke individuals campaigning against godly laws, but there are many pressure groups and individuals speaking out to present Christ’s standards and grace to the world around us.

I offer the following PX Classroom course:

GCSE Citizenship Studies

This is a two-year course for the AQA exam board.

This course has four components:

  1. Life in Modern Britain (principles and values which underpin British society, the role of the media, campaigns, what people understand by identity, and ways to make a difference in society)
  2. Rights and Responsibilities (why we have a legal system and how it operates, crime rates and punishments, international law and agreements, and how one might engage in the legal system)
  3. Politics and Participation (how the British constitution functions, all the different institutions involved and how they interact, how the Government makes decisions, and where power comes from)
  4. Taking Citizenship Action (how to campaign and engage in society).

The second half of the fourth component becomes practical when the student carries out a personal investigation of a citizenship issue of their own choice.

The course trains students how to answer exam questions biblically: without compromise, but with wisdom and tact.
