Teacher Profile
Mrs Kate Andreyev, BA, PGCEÂ
French & Spanish
I hold a BA in French & Spanish from the University of Oxford and a PGCE from the University of Manchester to teach French and Spanish up to A-Level. I worked for five years as a French and Spanish teacher at Repton School in Derbyshire, where I gained experience teaching KS3, GCSE, AS-Level, A-Level, and university entrance. This is where I developed a strategic approach towards public exams, so that my students achieved their potential and learned to aim for excellence.
My love of Spanish and French began with family holidays when I was a child and developed at secondary school, where I was taught by excellent Modern Languages teachers, one of whom was a Christian who made a great impression on me. Reading Spanish and French at Oxford allowed me to study great works of literature by some of the most celebrated French and Spanish writers in the world. As a student, I spent time as a language assistant at a secondary school in Madrid, took a language course in Montpellier, and worked in a hotel in the French-speaking canton of Vaud in Switzerland.
While teaching at Repton, I met my husband at the local church where I was a member. Although I had been involved in the Christian meetings and Bible studies at Repton, it wasn’t until I had children of my own that I really began to understand the importance of Christian education. For the Christian, education only truly makes sense and brings lasting joy, when we learn under the Lordship of the one who created and sustains all things, who knows everything, and who loves us more than we can imagine! Our two children were home educated all the way through to their IGCSEs. Our younger daughter now studies Spanish and French at A-Level, and our older daughter reads French at the same university college I attended (the Queen’s College, Oxford). I hope that I have managed to inspire them with a love for languages and a desire to use whatever gifts God has given them for His greater glory. That is my aim for all of my students.
Why learn French and Spanish?
Both French and Spanish are truly global languages, spoken not just in France and Spain but also on six continents. There are over 500 million native speakers of Spanish, making it the second most spoken native language in the world, with 21 countries having Spanish as an official language. There are over 300 million French speakers in the world, with around 75 million being native speakers throughout 29 countries. Therefore proficiency in Spanish and French provides so many opportunities not just for study, employment, and travel throughout the world, but – wonderfully – for living out the Great Commission of Matthew 28 and discipling all nations. Our God is a speaking God who communicates with us, who created language and languages, and whose own Son is the Word. Understanding and speaking other languages brings blessing and unity in Christ (as it did on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2). It is also fundamental to the New Creation in which Christians are gathered before God from every nation, tribe, people, and language (Revelation 7).
