Teacher Profile

Mrs Helen Hotchkiss, MEng & Man, QTS

Mathematics

I hold a first-class honours master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham (MEng & Man, 1992). I have also achieved Qualified Teacher Status through the Graduate Teacher Programme at the University of Reading.

I started teaching after nine years in industry, wanting to do something that would really help those I worked with. To date, my teaching career has been based in two state comprehensives, an international school, and a Further Education College, alongside private tutoring work.

Since 2003 I have taught Mathematics to children, teenagers, and adults in classes, small groups, and one-to-one. My focus is on identifying the needs of each student and teaching in ways that will both engage and challenge them, including those who have previously found Mathematics difficult.

Some of my students have had particular learning needs or speak English as a second language. Besides teaching KS3 and KS4 secondary Mathematics (Edexcel and IGCSE), I have taught Functional Skills, which for many post-16 students is a gateway to GCSE.

Mathematics has always fascinated me, since it gives us a language to describe and represent the ordered, complex, and amazing universe that God has made. Mathematics is a language that is used in scientific research, technology, data analysis, and risk assessment. It is also used in very ordinary, everyday contexts such as calculating discounts, planning DIY projects, and reading graphs. Mathematical skills are therefore essential for many aspects of adult life and equip Christian young people to be witnesses for Christ in many different careers.

I am excited to be able to support Christian home-schooling families by offering Mathematics as part of the PX Classrooms team.

I offer the following PX Classroom courses:
