Course Overview
This course is an introduction to Latin. It is a five-term course running from January 2024 until June 2025. It lays the groundwork for a GCSE in Latin. No prior knowledge of the subject is required.
The course broadly follows the Cambridge Latin Course and covers the grammar required for the Entry Level 3 qualification (OCR). Arrangements can be discussed to sit this qualification, but the coursework required by OCR means a suitable examination centre would need to be secured by the parents for the student.
Course Method
Students must procure the following textbooks in advance: Cambridge Latin Course Books 1 & 2, though initially Book 1 will be sufficient. The 4th edition should be obtained (Book 1: ISBN 9780521635431; Book 2: ISBN 9780521644686). A free online version of Book 1 can be found at www.dl.cambridgescp.com/books/book-i.
The classes involve mostly verbal translation with interaction from the students. They also involve the discussion of grammatical points and Roman culture, as well as exercises in written grammar and translation.
Vocabulary homework and a short written homework will be set each week (30 minutes total).
