Course Overview
This is a KS2 course in writing which aims to motivate reluctant or struggling young learners, as well as any other students, to engage in regular writing tasks and even to enjoy writing. Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) method of teaching (see below), the lessons gradually build a toolbox of skills and grammatical concepts with which the students can progress confidently as writers, without the frustration of unnecessary ‘busy work’. This course also aligns with the KS2 expectations of grammar mastery, writing fluency, editing skills, and vocabulary development.
Students must be at least nine years of age, and be able to hold a pencil and do most of their own writing by hand. But if the student has special needs please contact the Teacher first to discuss how this could be accommodated.
Course Method
By means of a gentle modelling and step-by-step approach, this course provides the essential tools needed for writing. This is not a creative writing class (although we do have fun and use our imaginations at times!) but teaches writing in the classical method with an intentional, teacher-led style. It is aimed for children aged 9 to 11 who have passed the ‘grammar stage’ of copy work and dictation, and have moved into the ‘dialectic stage’ of learning structure and style through studying content provided.
This method is also ideal for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or higher learning needs, as the focus is on modelling. Grammar concepts are learned gradually and in context, and spelling struggles are not prohibitive to good writing.
Notes are distributed by email prior to the class. Lessons are interactive, with some tasks being modelled and completed in class. There is also a weekly assignment due the following Monday for marking before the next class. This should take about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the type of assignment and the aptitude of the student.
Parents are encouraged and welcome to sit in the class with students at the KS2 level so as to support them in their assignment for the week. Over time they can assess whether or not their child needs this support.
