Course Overview
This PX Classroom is fun, engaging, and especially designed for children. It covers the basics of BSL and how to communicate using hands, facial expressions, and body language. Through interactive lessons, games, and activities, the students will learn:
- the BSL alphabet: Fingerspelling letters to spell names and simple words.
- basic vocabulary: Common signs, including for colours, animals, family members, and so on.
- religious vocabulary: Common signs used in a church setting as well as some Christian songs in BSL.
- simple conversations: How to greet others, ask and answer basic questions, and use polite phrases.
- the expression of emotions and actions: Signs for feelings, favourite activities, and everyday actions.
The course encourages children to build confidence in signing and to appreciate how BSL helps people communicate. By the end, the students will be able to hold a basic conversation in BSL and understand deaf culture. Ideal for beginners, this course is a great way to discover the joy of signing!
Course Method
Each week, the teacher will introduce new signs through live classes and then upload video demonstrations to a dedicated, private, YouTube channel. This channel will serve as a valuable resource, allowing children to review and practise the signs at their own pace.
Every week, children will receive a small homework assignment to practise their new skills, with tasks like signing their favourite colours, introducing family members, or creating a mini conversation using BSL. These activities help reinforce learning and give students a chance to share what they have learned with their classmates.
