Course Overview
This course prepares students to sit the Cambridge (CAIE) IGCSE in English Language (0990).
It is a two-year course suitable for any student hoping to sit their exam in May 2028. It assumes KS3 level has already been attained.
Please note that the student should be at least 15 years old and preferably 16 by the time they sit the exams.
Course Method
This course focuses on key reading and writing skills: comprehension, summary writing, language analysis, extended written responses to fiction and non-fiction texts, as well as creative, descriptive writing.
We will learn these various skills over the course of the first year, responding to a wide range of texts. Then we will practise and apply the skills in the second year, tackling exam-style questions and past papers. I hope that the students both enjoy learning the skills (which are so useful for life in general) and feel confident in their preparations for the exams.
The following coursebook and workbook must both be purchased to accompany this course:
- Cambridge IGCSE First Language English Coursebook (CUP, 2025) (ISBN 9781009528795)
- Cambridge IGCSE First Language English Workbook (CUP, 2025) (ISBN 9781009528801)
It is important that you buy these specific editions (instead of older, second-hand ones) as the new syllabus for 2027 onwards has significant changes and these textbooks reflect those changes.
Lessons are a mixture of teaching sessions with accompanying slides, and interactive class discussions and activities. Students will often be asked to complete short written exercises in class in a workshop-style lesson.
Class notes, homework, and other resources are distributed on Google Classroom. Each student will therefore need their own, free, Google Classroom account. Access to a printer is necessary.
Weekly homework will mostly consist of a main writing task, as well as additional exercises from the Workbook. Homework will take approximately two to three hours to complete, depending on the student’s ability. There will be a mixture of self-marked and teacher-marked assignments. Writing tasks are submitted and marked on Google Classroom.
Lessons can be recorded and made available to the student, if the Teacher is notified beforehand of a planned absence.
