Important Note on Payments
This PX Classroom will only take place if a sufficient number of students reserve a place. To reserve a place, submit your order for this course as if you were going to buy it, but select ‘Direct Bank Transfer’ (not card payment) and only transfer the money much later once the Teacher has confirmed to you that the course will indeed take place (Do not create a new order in order to pay as that will purchase a second place on the course!). If the course does not run, there will be nothing to pay and your order will simply be cancelled.
Course Overview
This two-year course covers content to meet the AQA GCSE specifications.
This course does not assume any prior knowledge of the course content, but it does require Key Stage 3 levels in both English and Maths, as it involves both extended written answers and viewing graphs and statistics.
This course has four components:
- Life in Modern Britain (principles and values which underpin British society, the role of the media, campaigns, what people understand by identity, and ways to make a difference in society)
- Rights and Responsibilities (why we have a legal system and how it operates, crime rates and punishments, international law and agreements, and how one might engage in the legal system)
- Politics and Participation (how the British constitution functions, all the different institutions involved and how they interact, how the Government makes decisions, and where power comes from)
- Taking Citizenship Action (how to campaign and engage in society).
The second half of the fourth component becomes practical when the student carries out a personal investigation of a citizenship issue of their own choice.
Course Method
The following two books must be procured in advance:
- The AQA GCSE (9-1) Citizenship Studies coursebook (2nd edition, 2021, ISBN 9781398322936). The lessons work through this book.
- The AQA GCSE (9–1) Citizenship Workbook (ISBN 9781398317208). Homework is set from this book.
Homework is self-marked with reference to the Hodder Education website. Tests are set from past papers upon the completion of each section and are marked by the Teacher. Students should ordinarily spend about two hours per week on homework and self-study, depending on the speed of the student.
A video recording is made of each lesson (with only the teacher visible) and upon request can be made temporarily available to a student who missed the lesson.
