GCGCSE Latin (2028 exam) – Term 2 (Jan. 2027)

Course Overview

This PX Classroom follows the GCSE OCR specification. The first year focuses on language and grammar while the second year involves detailed study of original Latin texts and Roman literature and culture in general (the Literature and Culture and Poetry B selections of the course). Students should have already completed the PX KS3 Intermediate Latin course or have already studied Latin to an equivalent level otherwise. A preliminary test must be completed to ensure suitability.

Course Method

Students must procure the following textbooks over the two years, the first one in advance of the first lesson:

• Latin to GCSE Part 1 by Henry Cullen & John Taylor (ISBN 9781780934402)
• Latin to GCSE Part 2 by Henry Cullen & John Taylor (ISBN 9781780934419)
• Essential GCSE Latin by John Taylor (ISBN 9781350003804)

In addition, an “Aeneid 2” workbook is required for this course. The cost of this will depend on the number of students taking the course. The workbook costs the PX Teacher approximately £84, who then prints and binds copies for each student and posts them for approximately £10 per student. The OCR set texts change every two years so these workbooks cannot be reused by the PX Teacher after this course is over.

This class is held on Zoom and makes use of Google Classroom as a learning platform. If a student cannot make both lessons in a given week, a recorded lesson can be provided. Students must catch up with the recorded lesson between classes.

Independent study of approximately 1.5 hours per week is required in addition to a 45-minute homework each week.

Course Details

Term 2 comprises 20 lessons (two per week). Each lesson lasts 40 minutes.

Term 2 focuses on Roman Literature and Culture. The prescribed topics are Myth and Religion and the Romans in Britain. Regular unseen Latin translation continues.

This PX Classroom is held on Mondays at 10.30am and Fridays at 3.30pm (London time zone) starting from Monday, 11th January 2027. There will be no lesson on 22nd or 26th February due to the half-term break. The last lesson is due to be on 22nd March 2027.
