Course Overview
This course covers content for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, incorporating listening skills and music appreciation at GCSE level (for more details see the teacher’s Profile). It is a one-year course requiring a basic knowledge of basic music notation (the stave and simple note values) and will best suit those who already play an instrument at Grade 2 level or above.
Course Method
Lessons are designed to inspire students, not just give information, and there will be plenty of opportunity for interaction. Students will be given short exercises to complete during the lesson and will need both a manuscript book and a regular notebook for this.
Homework is set from All in One to Grade 5 (3rd edition; ISBN 9780993447501) which must be procured in advance, along with the answer book (ISBN 9780993447549). Homework is self-marked and any arising problems can be discussed in the lesson. Also required is the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory Practice Papers 2022 (ISBN 9781786015372). Occasional tests will be set from these papers and marked by the teacher. Access to a piano or keyboard will be useful for some of the homework assignments but is not strictly essential.
