Important Note

The publication of this course here is for the purpose of advanced notice. Actual booking for this course opens in May 2027.

This PX Classroom will only take place if a sufficient number of students reserve a place. To reserve a place, submit your order for this course as if you were going to buy it, but select ‘Direct Bank Transfer’ (not card payment) and only transfer the money much later once the Teacher has confirmed to you that the course will indeed take place (Do not create a new order in order to pay as that will purchase a second place on the course!). If the course does not run, there will be nothing to pay and your order will simply be cancelled.

Course Overview

This course covers content for ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, incorporating listening skills and music appreciation at GCSE level (for more details see the teacher’s Profile). It is a one-year course requiring a basic knowledge of basic music notation (the stave and simple note values) and will best suit those who already play an instrument at Grade 2 level or above.

Course Method

Lessons are designed to inspire students, not just give information, and there will be plenty of opportunity for interaction. Students will be given short exercises to complete during the lesson and will need both a manuscript book and a regular notebook for this.

Homework is set from a combination of worksheets produced by myself and ABRSM practice papers. Homework is expected to take around one hour per week, although this will very from student to student.

The following books are required and must be acquired before the course:

  • ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory Practice Papers 2022 (ISBN 9781786015372)
  • ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory Practice Papers 2024 (ISBN 9781786016744)
  • ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory Practice Papers 2025 (ISBN 9781786011718).

Occasional tests will be set from these papers and marked by the Teacher, and others will be used for regular homework. Access to a piano or keyboard will be useful for some of the homework assignments but is not strictly essential.
