Classical Greek GCSE (2028 exam) – Term 1 (Sept. 2026)

Course Overview

This two-year course is ideal for any linguistically able and ambitious student who would like to learn Ancient Greek and work at an intensive pace towards a GCSE qualification at the end of two years. Complete beginners as well as students who have already acquired some knowledge of Classical Greek are welcome to sign up for this course. There will be opportunities to study the language of New Testament Greek during the course.

The course follows the OCR specification for GCSE Greek.

It may very occasionally be necessary to reschedule classes. If a student is unable to attend the rescheduled time, or if they miss a class for any other valid reason, a recording of the lesson can be made available.

Course Method

Students acquire knowledge of the language of Classical Greek by learning the prescribed vocabulary, syntax, and accidence set for GCSE. This is reinforced by the regular translation of sentences and passages from Greek to English, including oral practice in class and written homework assignments.

This weekly homework is either self-marked or marked by the Teacher, depending on the difficulty. Students should aim to complete at least three hours of independent study each week (including the weekly homework).

The following language learning textbook is required for the second year:

Greek to GCSE: Part 2. By John Taylor. Revised edition for OCR GCSE Classical Greek, Bloomsbury, 2016 (ISBN 9781474255202).

For the literature components all students will need to acquire a copy of the following resource material:

Course Details

Term 1 comprises 14 weekly lessons. Each lesson lasts 60 minutes.

This PX Classroom is held on Thursdays at 1pm (London time zone) starting from Thursday, 3rd September 2026. There will be no lesson on 29th October due to half-term. The last lesson is due to be on 17th December 2026.
