Important Note on Payments
This PX Classroom will only take place if a sufficient number of students reserve a place. To reserve a place, submit your order for this course as if you were going to buy it, but select “Direct Bank Transfer” (not card payment) and only transfer the money much later once the Teacher has confirmed to you that the course will indeed take place. (Do not create a new order in order to pay, as that will purchase a second place on the course!). If the course does not run, there will be nothing to pay and your order will simply be cancelled.
Course Overview
This course covers the content for the Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International Specifications in Economics. It is a one-year course which can be a stand-alone qualification or can be taken as the first of two years of the PX Classroom A-Level Economics course. It is not necessary to have an IGCSE in Economics as a prerequisite, but students must already have a reasonable competency in Maths and English comparable to GCSE/IGCSE standard. Also essential is an interest in current affairs as students are expected to watch or read the news on a regular basis. Students who work hard will develop a competent understanding of the workings of an economy, both at a micro- and macroeconomic level.
Course Method
Comprehensive class notes are distributed to students in advance of lessons. A copy of Tim Harford’s The Undercover Economist (ISBN 9780349119854) and A-Level Economics: Complete Revision and Practice (CGP; ISBN 9781782943471) must be acquired in advance. At some point in the course, students will be expected to purchase a revision guide. Homework will be set on a weekly basis and self-marked. Tests compiled from past exam papers are set on completion of each topic and are marked by the Teacher.
Lessons are interactive, focusing on achieving excellent understanding of the course content, developing good economic methodology, and developing the critical and analytical thinking skills necessary for further study in Economics. Students will be expected to learn to communicate ideas clearly, both on paper and orally, and to critically assess the worldview assumptions that underpin the contemporary study of Economics.
