Important Note on Payments
This PX Classroom will only take place if a sufficient number of students reserve a place. To reserve a place, submit your order for this course as if you were going to buy it, but select ‘Direct Bank Transfer’ (not card payment) and only transfer the money much later once the Teacher has confirmed to you that the course will indeed take place (Do not create a new order in order to pay as that will purchase a second place on the course!). If the course does not run, there will be nothing to pay and your order will simply be cancelled.
Course Overview
This course covers the content for the AQA specification. The course is also suitable for Cambridge and Edexcel International A-level, but there may be need for supplementary private sessions. It is a one-year course and assumes that GCSE-level Chemistry has already been achieved. It can be a stand-alone qualification or can be taken as the first of two years of the PX Classroom A-Level Chemistry course.
At AS-Level, the assessment of practical skills is by written exams only. At A2-Level a separate practical endorsement can be taken for AQA. This is advisable if the student wishes to study science at university. There is no practical endorsement for Edexcel International A-Level. Cambridge International A-Level has a compulsory practical examination.
Course Method
Class notes are distributed in advance and are filled in during the class.
Homework is set from the current AQA Chemistry AS-Level student book which must be purchased in advance (2nd edition; ISBN 9780198351818). Homework is self-marked. Tests compiled from past exam papers are set on completion of each topic and are marked by the teacher.
Lessons are interactive, focusing on achieving excellent understanding of the content, developing good scientific methodology, and developing the critical and analytical thinking skills necessary for further study in Chemistry.
All practical work is taught by the use of videos. A video recording is made of each lesson (with only the teacher visible) and upon request it can be made temporarily available to a student who missed the lesson.
Course Details
Term 1 covers Physical Chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, reaction kinetics, and equilibria). These wonderful topics reveal the amazing design of the atom, as explained by the theory of quantum mechanics, and the perfection of God’s design in the bonding of these building blocks to provide the huge variety of materials, both natural and synthetic, which we enjoy as stewards of God’s creation.
Term 1 comprises 28 lessons (two per week for 14 weeks). Each lesson lasts 1hr 30 minutes.
This PX Classroom is held on Tuesdays at 11.30am and Thursdays at 11am (London time zone), starting from Tuesday, 1st September 2026. There will be no lessons during the half-term week which commences 26th October and during one other week (TBC). The last lessons are due to be on 15th & 17th December 2026.
