Consultant Profile

Mrs Miriam Towers, LLB, MSc

LNAT Consultant

I was trained as a barrister, having studied Law at GCSE and A-Level, and obtained an LLB in Law from the University of Durham in 1995. I subsequently studied at London’s Inns of Court School of Law to become a Barrister at Law, and subsequently practised at the Bar in criminal, family, and civil cases. I also hold a Master’s degree in Legal Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University.

I very much enjoy teaching, in particular the ability to debate and assess the arguments that all students will inevitably come across. It is especially the case that law students need to be ready to engage in active discussion. I believe it is best to be willing to debate anything: doubt and unbelief grow in silence, whereas the truth of the Bible stands up to all criticism and is always relevant to our current situation. As a Barrister, where you have to be willing to argue either side, I learned that it is very important to know the case that you are arguing, and to be thoroughly acquainted with its strengths and weaknesses.

But in order to be able to debate effectively, one needs to be able to reason at a high level, to perceive and analyse defects in argumentation, and, if relevant, to read documents closely in order to be able to assess with confidence what they are actually saying. This is exactly what the The Law National Aptitude Test (LNAT) is testing and why it is a requirement for a successful application to study Law at a number of Russell Group universities. The LNAT is designed to help these universities to distinguish between already highly achieving applicants, and assess their suitability to study and succeed in a Law degree at a prestigious university whose courses are already heavily oversubscribed. To achieve a suitably impressive mark in the LNAT, preparatory work is often essential, including studying past papers, writing practice essays, and honing thinking skills. My aim in tutoring is not to provide “the answers” (as the LNAT does not require the mastery of a particular body of knowledge), but rather to work with the student in following intricate arguments and seeing why the correct answer in an LNAT past paper was, indeed, correct. My coaching is, therefore, very much based upon the individual requirements of each student and the areas in which they would like to gain greater experience and confidence.

Students are entirely responsible for booking their own LNAT. Registration for, and booking of, LNAT tests for entry into university in September 2027 opens on 1st August 2026. Testing starts on 1st September 2026.

Different universities have different timetables for when the LNAT has to be taken. I strongly advise that the student pays attention to the particular deadlines that they have to meet for their target universities.
